Benjamin Franklin's classic Poor Richard's Almanac is chiefly remembered for being a repository of Franklin's aphorisms and proverbs, many of which live on in and are commonly used today, and have been newly typeset and included in this edition.
These maxims typically counsel thrift and courtesy, with a dash of cynicism.
The orginal Almanac also included the calendar, weather, poems, and astronomical and astrological information that a typical almanac of the period would contain - those sections are typically of little interest to the modern reader and are not contained in this edition.
Poor Richard Almanac eBook Benjamin Franklin
The Eighteenth Century was less hindered than our age by copyright restrictions. Thus much of what Benjamin Franklin, in his "Poor Richard" persona, published was in fact gleaned from earlier writers. Never mind that: these witticisms and pithy sayings are genuine Americana and well worth reading -- and owning. This inexpensive Dover edition is far from comprehensive, but what's in it is good.Product details

Poor Richard Almanac eBook Benjamin Franklin Reviews
There's a reason why it's such a classic. The wisdom in this book is timeless.
This is an easy read with facts about life, money, and humanity. Take the time to read it. Happy reading.
This little book contains much wisdom. Benjamin Franklin was a treasure and a very impressive man. He is, indeed, remembered fondly as one of our greatest Founding Father!
A Great Almanack ! A Smart Man He Was > The Proverb"s and Verse"s Apply Even Today , Good Word"s of Wisdom To Contemplate in your Mind !!!!!!
This is the first item I've ever returned to , out of hundreds of items we've purchased here. To be clear, I'm talking about the softcover "Poor Richard's Almanack" published in "print on demand" format by General Books ([...]
Apparently the contents were scanned by an optical character reader, and clearly no human bothered to look at the resulting text, as the pages are filled with typographical errors and odd layout. I'm not talking about the differences between Colonial English and modern American English, I'm talking about incorrect substitutions of "d" for "c," multiple words run together without spaces, etc. This is inexcusable.
The uncredited introduction was apparently written by someone whose first language is not English, and parts of it are practically indecipherable. Not so important if you're reading for the B. Franklin content, but again, inexcusable.
This "book" is only about 1/8" thick, and that includes five blank pages at the back. The type is 10 point Times, which is very small for anyone who has difficulty reading small print. Although printed with the "print on demand" process, the soft cover and interior pages are good quality.
This might be worthwhile if you picked it up for $1 or $2 at a rummage sale, but otherwise you may wish to find a more usable version of "Poor Richard's Almanack."
I had no idea how much of American culture and my upbringing came from this small book. With famous phrases like "glass houses" and "no pain, no gain" and insight like "If Jack's in love, he's no judge of Jill's Beauty" and "Historians relate, not so much what is done, as what they would have believed," I found myself highlighting way too much. I have found myself referencing and re-reading sections of the book, only a week or so after finishing it. It's worth going through thoughtfully and slowly, just like "Dark Souls."
So many nuggets of truth. Many of these short sayings have been passed down to is over hundreds of years, yet so many people have no idea that they were attributed to Benjamin Franklin. These are words to live by and if you haven't read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, please do yourself a favor and read it. It's available for free.on , and is arguably the best autobiography ever written.
